The SBIR/STTR program funds R&D (Research and Development) activities in for-profit companies!

The goal of the SBIR/STTR program is to encourage startups to create the most differentiated product through deep R&D so that they can be competitive in the market and hence sustain long-term businesses. Federal agencies differ in their preferences for the R&D topic as well as the stage of the company that they are known to fund. But by and large almost all agencies fund early-stage companies that have a great idea for a highly innovative product, with strong commercialization potential, and have some preliminary evidence to suggest that the idea has a high likelihood of working.
